Greenhouse Gas Reduction



The issue of climate change is one of extreme concern to man-kind and for the agriculture sector, and we recognise that the palm oil industry has a large role to play in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Indonesia. For palm oil producers, by far the biggest contribution is land use change, particularly clearance of drainage of peat soils and forest areas. In addition, the release of methane from palm oil mill effluent (POME) contributes significantly to the carbon footprint of the palm oil industry.

From August 2015, we have committed to our NDPE Sustainability Policy. The avoidance of high carbon stock forest and peatland which are significant source of emissions if distributed had and will significantly reduce carbon emissions in our new plantation areas. We are committed to progressively reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our operations. The monitoring and review of gas emissions will be through the RSPO PalmGHG reporting tools. We are planning to commission two methane capture biogas plants by year-end 2017, and target to complete three by the end of 2018. Once we have completed plans as well as the initial baseline measures we will develop and report on emissions reduction targets.
 
Waste Management

A "zero waste" policy on PO production waste by recycling waste products such as empty palm fruit bunches ("EFB") as organic fertiliser in our plantations and compost. Nutrient recycling is maximised to improve moisture, nutrients and carbon in the soil. Using land cover crops immediately after planting to conserve soil moisture and minimise soil erosion.
